Associate Veterinarian - Animal Hospital of Meadville

Licensed Veterinarian for Pennsylvania and is a graduate of an accredited veterinary program and passed the North American Veterinary Licensing Examination and maintains registration eligibility status in accordance with rules adopted by the board.

Ideal Candidate: Our ideal Associate Veterinarian provides the best medical standards and exceptional customer service to clients and patients.  The Associate Veterinarian maintains animal health by preventing, diagnosing and treating disease and injuries and educating clients of the best care of their pets. The Associate Veterinarian directs the veterinary team for patient and client care in accordance to clinic policies and procedures. The Associate Veterinarian uses initiative independently without specific instruction, but communicates issues and unfamiliar situations with fellow veterinarians for a decision or help. The ideal candidate maintains the hometown feel with clients and staff by expressing care and compassion.

Major Goals:

  • Build rapport with clients by gathering information, listening to, and empathizing with their concerns 
  • Communicate and educate clients on topics such as pet diagnosis, treatment plans, prescribed medications, preventative health care and nutritional needs
  • Perform physical examinations, vaccinations, wound dressings, surgical/dental procedures that deliver the best medical standards
  • Prescribe medications based on patient diagnostics and annual prevention and nutritional needs
  • Perform laboratory procedures and diagnostic tests, including parasitology, hematology and urinalysis
  • Operate diagnostic equipment, such as radiographic and ultrasound equipment, and interpret the resulting images 
  • Administer anesthetics, perform surgery, and monitor patients during surgery and recovery with the assistance of the technical team
  • Have the genuine desire to and enjoy working with animals even when they are in pain, ill or stressed 
  • Understand patient needs when quality of life is a concern and euthanize when needed
  • Perform multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborate with other veterinarians and support staff to ensure the highest standard of care for our patients

Position Overview:

  • Full-Time (32 hours minimum) or Part-Time
  • Work week is Monday – Friday and one Saturday per month (depending on employment status)

The clinics are open Monday through Friday and one Saturday a month for most of the practices.  We are focused on wellness preventative care and providing the best medical standards for our patients. Essential Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to examine animals to assess their health and diagnose problems
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and practices of veterinary medicine and science
  • Commitment to practicing the highest standard of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics
  • Ability to comprehend the severity and urgency of care needed for a patient from critical care treatments to wellness visits 
  • Document actions by completing forms, reports, logs and patient records
  • Ability to use practice management software to update patient histories, vitals, medications, services, and invoicing, amongst other veterinary practices
  • Posses strong computer skills in order to obtain and enter client information, order laboratory and diagnostic tests, and receive and send messages
  • Ability to read and interpret documents, including federal and state regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and medical texts
  • Possess strong diagnostic and surgical skills
  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills – for client and fellow staff
  • Knowledge of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words and math skills for accuracy of dosing and measurement
  • Ability to remain calm and not let emotions overwhelm attitude or performance
  • Be a critical and sensible thinker – be able to problem solve
  • Ability to manage a veterinary team

Education and Experience:

  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree
  • Valid Pennsylvania Veterinary license

Responsibilities:

  • Communicate effectively with pet owners to educate them about their pets' health and treatment options
  • Maintain knowledge of healthcare recommendations for spaying, neutering, dental care, weight management, and other owner questions that are current in veterinary medicine
  • Be familiar with common medications, flea and tick products, vaccinations, nutrition and dewormers
  • Handle all client complaints calmly and professionally and know the proper procedures to follow to ensure a positive clinic image is maintained
  • Be sensitive with clients regarding quality of life, terminal illness or major medical issues
  • Humanely euthanize animals when the decision has been mutually agreed upon by the patient’s owner
  • Perform client calls regarding patient care and post treatment at home care as needed
  • Follow through with all issues that need to be completed 
  • Work professionally with outside sources, fellow staff and clients
  • Be familiar with practice and veterinary professional websites to guide clients and answer questions
  • Attend staff meetings for the clinic and organization throughout the year
  • Attend sponsored lunches or meetings that educate on veterinary products and services
  • Utilize practice management software, Google and Microsoft programs
  • Be timely - to work and in matters throughout the work day
  • Work in an effective manner with all veterinary staff
