Cat Diagnostic Imaging

What exactly is diagnostic imaging?

It's actually a group of different procedures that we can do to figure out what might be wrong with a particular pet. For example, you might notice that my cat Sophie is missing a leg. We found a tumor on her leg, and after taking some x-rays, which is a type of diagnostic imaging, we determined that it was a type of cancer that required the removal of her leg.

What types of diagnostic imaging are there besides x-rays?

Besides x-rays, which can be used for various purposes like checking their chest or abdomen, there are procedures like ultrasound. Ultrasound allows us to get a better look at individual structures within the abdomen. Even echocardiograms, a type of ultrasound, provide a closer look at the beating heart.

Are there other types of diagnostic imaging that general practices might not have?

Yes, there are other types of diagnostic images that we can't necessarily do in a general practice like this. CT scans or MRI machines can take detailed images of things like the brain or the spinal cord. Referral clinics often have these types of diagnostic images, but most general practices do not.
